Custom Engraved Brass Nameplates are a great way to add that little piece of insurance in getting your buddy back in the event he/she is lost. Canadian Gun Dog Supply offers various types of custom name tags but the most popular by far are the brass nameplates that affix directly to the dogs leather/biothane/day-glo collar. They are available with up to 4 lines of text and also enhance the beauty of the dog’s collar.
I am always shocked at what people want engraved on their tags. I am often requested to engrave the dogs name and then a phone # or address. Let’s remember why we are getting a nameplate in the first place – to increase our chances of getting our dog back in the event they are lost. By simply putting the dogs name on there, automatically decreases those chances. My recommendation is always put your name first followed by at least 2 phone #’s. Make sure you put area codes on there in case you are traveling. I usually put my name followed by my cell phone # (which is always with me) followed by my home #. Be sure that whatever #’s you use to have at least an answering machine on that line just in case you are not by the phone when someone calls. Some people also put “REWARD IF FOUND” or “CALL COLLECT”.These options are also advisable. If you use the reward if found be ready to pay up in the event someone calls and has your pooch. I had a customer recently put DAILY MEDS NEEDED followed by a phone # which I thought was great!
My opinion is that the space on these nameplates is limited so let's make the most of it! I have gone to just putting my 2 phone #'s on the tag, thats it! To me, Name, address, province and all the other fine details are not important. If I find a dog I look for a phone # to call. Yes a contact name is great and so is an address but you are going to find that info out anyways by calling the number. Remember, the less lines, the bigger the font, so if the fonts are small and not clear to read then there is no point at all.
Although these tags look great on any type of collar, appearance should be second in line compared to the ability to get your dog back.
Keep in mind that the less lines on your tag the larger the characters will be so keeping it at 2-3 lines is great. Remember to put the most important info on there and that is your name and contact # or contact # and call collect or reward if found works well also.
